With construction completed on a new 3,900 square foot welcome and discovery center, officials with Lovers Key State Park are eyeing an April opening date for the facility.

The 712 acre gulf front park, sandwiched between Bonita Beach and Fort Myers Beach, is located at 8700 Estero Blvd. on portions of four barrier islands, Lovers Key, Black Island, Inner Key and Long Key.

The new welcome and discovery center is a collaboration between the state of Florida and the non-profit, Friends Of Lovers Key (FOLKS) who raised $1.5 million dollars toward the total price tag of $6 million dollars.

The center, built on pillars and constructed to withstand a category 4 hurricane, will include a conference center suitable for wedding receptions, as well as interactive exhibits to educate the public on the park’s important role in the area’s ecosystem as well as the vast array of fish, wildlife and birds that call the area home.
